On 25 August 2025, the offices of the Association des Chauffeurs de Poids Lourds au Rwanda (ACPLRWA) welcomed Mr. Lubega Sebyala Munobwa, Head of Information and Communications at the International Transport Workers’ Federation (ITF) regional office, Nairobi.

The ITF, a global federation of workers’ unions operating worldwide, had previously collaborated with ACPLRWA. Mr. Lubega’s visit to Rwanda aimed at discussing ways of revitalizing and strengthening this cooperation.

The discussions between the two parties focused on reviving relations, defending workers’ (truck drivers’) rights, and improving their professional environment through collaboration with unions across different countries worldwide.

Mr. Lubega Sebyala Munobwa was received at ACPLRWA headquarters in Gikondo by Mr. Justin KANYAGISAKA, President of ACPLRWA, alongside members of the Executive Committee. After being introduced to the leadership team and various commissions of ACPLRWA, the delegation held a constructive dialogue.

In his presentation, Mr. Lubega, whose ITF regional office is based in Nairobi, explained the mission, objectives, and operations of the ITF in detail. He emphasized:

“Our primary focus is addressing injustices that workers face in their daily duties including truck drivers and encouraging workers to unite in associations or unions as an effective means of addressing challenges. While our work also covers other sectors such as fisheries, this remains at the heart of our mission.”

He further explained that ITF had previously engaged in partnership with ACPLRWA, but the cooperation was suspended due to shortcomings in the then leadership, which was perceived as not prioritizing members’ needs as required.

Beyond the transport sector, ITF also represents workers in other industries, including fishing, aviation, maritime, manufacturing, and other transportation-related fields.

During his stay, the ITF delegate also toured key sites, including Rugende Truck Stop where cross-border truck drivers park and rest, as well as the Dubai Port Logistics Facility in Kigali.

The ITF has consistently demonstrated its commitment to defending workers’ rights. For instance, in June 2025, over 100 truck drivers in Senegal were unfairly dismissed after requesting protective measures to safeguard them in their work. ITF intervened, advocated for them, and successfully ensured their reinstatement.

At the conclusion of the visit, ACPLRWA’s leadership thanked ITF for its renewed engagement and expressed commitment to reviving their cooperation for the benefit of truck drivers in Rwanda and beyond.
